Our Story

The unique origin of David’s tailoring career, and where the name Sew Generously comes from.

About DAVID PEW

The calling

David Pew’s sewing experience started and ended in elementary school when his mother taught him how to make pillows and tunics for his stuffed animals (all by hand, of course). From then on, sewing held no particular interest for David until the summer before his true calling.

David came into possession of a black, hooded robe that made him look like “The Death,” but without the scythe. For some reason, he was intrigued by this old robe with a rip in it.

Seeing David’s interest in this particular piece, his older sister, who had a tiny, almost-functional sewing machine, offered it to David so that he could fix his robe. David agreed to borrow the sewing machine from his sister, then immediately placed the sewing machine in a filing cabinet without even using it.

Several months later, on a warm, early fall day, David was walking to class at Western Washington University while meditating on a verse from the Bible: 2 Corinthians 9:6.
However, this verse has an agricultural reference used as a metaphor; it has absolutely nothing to do with a needle pulling thread. It was at this very moment when David heard the voice of God speaking directly to his heart. God said to David:

Yet, it would be another year before David noticed that God (quite appropriately) gave him his life’s calling in the form of a pun.

Immediately, David understood what he needed to do. After standing dumbfounded for a minute, marveling at how unexpectedly God had just transformed his entire world, he turned around on the spot and walked back home. The next day, David drove to JoAnn Fabrics and bought scissors, pins, fabric, and a pattern. Up until this point, he had never once used a sewing machine in his life (as his sister’s had gone straight into the filing cabinet), but David was pretty sure he would be good at it.
However, when God gives a person their true calling, there is also a lot of human effort involved. David found himself blessed with more patience than he ever would have known he possessed,
so he used it to gain knowledge and develop his talent. David put all his effort and time into his work, finding, unexpectedly, a deep-rooted passion for his newly founded calling.

David has been working since 2006, pushing himself almost daily to excessive hours and to the frayed edges of nearly infinite, divinely bestowed patience. David’s fascination with his “calling” had made him gain experience as rapidly as humanly possible. He aspires to and even surpass the level of craftsmanship of those who have taught him.

"My training is not complete, and it will never be. Learning is a never-ending experience. For now, I'll harvest the fruit of my hard work." – David Pew

Absolutely love this place!! It has the look, feel, and service of an old-school tailor shop. It feels like you are walking into the “Kingsmen” shop. It is so nice to be able to walk into a place and immediately trust the people.

David did an excellent job measuring and fitting me. Many tailors these days just use tech and apps, but this was a true measuring by a professional and you just can’t replace that. SGB was all around a very positive experience.
